Editing

Editing

speed of editing-
i na film each film may last a matter of seconds, or it could continue for a couple of minuets. The speed of editing will help determine the mood of whig is taking place on the screen. For example, an action film would have a fast pace and a romance would have a slower pace.

creating pace-
If film makers want an audience to feel anxiety and suspense, the editing will be quick- the screen/shots changing frequently.
if the mood is more relaxed and the scenes last longer and there are cuts less frequently, for example in a romantic/comedy. film doesn't always need editing, Russian ark was filmed in one take using a steadicam and a digital camera. This requires split-second timing and organisation.
Scenes at the beginning of the film - as i begins to tell a story - must be long enough for is to be able to understand where we are and   what us going on. it also introduces the main character.

cross cutting-
when you edit two sequences together, two things is happening at the same time in different locations. It can be used to create drama, tension, anxiety, direct emotion and making subtle links between characters

Trailers-
A trailer for a film needs to pack in detail, therefore editing will be very fast.

Style of editing-

  • How shots are linked together
  • The movement from one shot to the next is called a translation
  • Basic transitions include:
  • Straight cut -
Most common and visible and "invisible" form of transition. One shot movies instantaneously it the next without attracting the audiences attention. Straight cuts help retain reality.
  • Fade
A gradual darkening or lightening of an image until the screen is completely black or white. Use to indicate the beginning or end of a particular or the end of a particular section of time within the narrative, can show the passing of time.
  • dissolve
The dissolving of one shot of the screen while another shot is fading in. The audience will be able to  see both shots on the screen mid-point of the dissolve. if the film maker wants to show a connection between two characters , place or objects.

  • wipe
Images is pushed off the screen by another, images can be pushed to the left or the right, signal moved between different location that are experiencing the same time.

  • Advanced editing skills-
  • Continuity -
Eye line match, we see a character looking at something off screen and then we cut to a shot of what they are looking at. Match on action, we see character start an action in one shot and then see at them continue it to the next scene.

  • 180 degree rule-
The 180 degree rule is a basic guideline that states that two characters in the same scene should always have the same left or right relationship to each other, if the camera passes over the imaginary axis connection the two subjects , its called crossing the  line.

  • Shot/reverse shot
Shot/reverse shot is used to show conversation/ arguments.
Shot reverse shot (or shot/countershot) is a film technique where one character is shown looking at another character (often off-screen), and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character. Since the characters are shown facing in opposite directions, the viewer assumes that they are looking at each other.

  • 4 key concepts
  • Media Language, Media language means the way in which media texts communicate with people that use them, The arrangement of technical elements, camera, movement, editing, sound and images create meaning in products, denotation - is what we see and connotation - is what it means/ what it could mean
  • Institution, All of media is a business. They are not priamrily there to entertain us. They are there to make money, everything they produce is to make money, E.g: Netflix (Netflix originals), Snapchat (social media platforms with subscriptions), Epic Games (video games), Spotify(Music), Apple(technology and smartphones)
  • Audience, who the media is created for for example music some is made for some ages whereas some older people may dislike the music also with instagam where older ages would dislike this stuff as its for younger ages.
  • Representation, how people, places, ideas are presented in the media, for an example Donald Trump is seen as racist, rude and annoying. also there is the Paulers how they are rude, disrespectful, and break stuff
  • Narrative and Genre are also useful
