Sound

Sound

diegetic/ non diegetic

diegetic refers to the world of the text,
  • Examples: dialogue, sound effects, music with a source within the text e.g a radio.
Non diegetic refers to everything outside the world of the text,
  • Examples: voiceovers, soundtracks, captions, titles and subtitles.
on/ off screen
On-screen sound -
  • the audience can see the source of sound.
Off-screen sound -
  • the audience can't see the source of sound.

There are many diegetic and or non diegetic scenes in this movie like: the sound from the radio in the background also the back ground music in the sad scene also you could hear the noises all around the room like when he dropped his phone and the clicking one his keyboard and the cutting and pulling on the cello-tape.

parallel sounds and contrapuntal,

  • parallel sound matches the action,
  • Contrapuntal sound does not match the action,

The moment the music starts the action gets a lot more intense and dramatic. The crosscutting to a calm atmosphere creates a contradicting effect, during the first attack we can hear the music of jaws. This signals that something bad and or scary will happen.

The Sound bridge helps to create a smooth transition between one scene to the other. The sound 'bridges' the two scenes.

In this scene he starts to remember a police scene that  merges into the scene making it into the sound bridge of 2 scenes.

  1. You've picked a great example when analysing diegetic/non-diegetic sounds however you seem to have just listed them. Please go back through the sequence you've embedded and pinpoint what are the diegetic sounds and what are the non-diegetic sounds.

Additionally, you need to identify the parallel/contrapuntal sounds within the 'Jaws' clip please.

Ensure that these changes are made by Monday 3rd of December.

    Thanks,
